CFD Rescue Vac goes in service

On December 6th last year, the Chicago Fire Department (CFD) took a significant step forward by introducing a new asset to its Special Operations Division. The newly established Rescue Vac Unit 5-2-4 is now part of the CFD's emergency response capabilities. Based at the Special Operations facility located at 39th and Honore, this unit is a modified X-Streets and Sanitation sewer vac truck that had previously been on display during the International Fire Chief’s Association trade show at McCormick Place in the summer of 2023. The unit is built on an LN Series Ford chassis and was upgraded by Rescue Vac Systems, a local company specializing in enhancing equipment for emergency rescue operations. This investment underscores the CFD’s commitment to improving its ability to respond to complex and challenging rescue scenarios. 5-2-4 will primarily be deployed for city-wide trench rescue incidents, but it can also be called upon for suburban rescues through the MABAS Box Alarm System. This flexibility ensures that the unit can support both urban and suburban communities when needed most. The truck was originally used by the Chicago Department of Streets and Sanitation before being retrofitted for emergency use. Its presence on the fire department’s fleet marks a strategic move toward more versatile and efficient rescue operations. Photos from the Fire Rescue International Trade Show in August 2023 show the unit in its pre-modification state, highlighting how much has changed since then. With its advanced features and specialized design, Rescue Vac Unit 5-2-4 is set to become a vital part of the CFD’s emergency response strategy.
