CFD Rescue Vac goes in service>
On December 6th, last year, the Chicago Fire Department (CFD) took a significant step forward by introducing a new asset to its Special Operations Division. A brand-new unit, **Rescue Vac Unit 5-2-4**, was officially added to the department's fleet. Based at the Special Operations facility on 39th and Honore, this unit is a modified X-Streets and Sanitation sewer vac truck that many may have seen during the International Fire Chief’s Association trade show at McCormick Place last summer.
Built on an LN Series Ford chassis, the unit has been upgraded by **Rescue Vac Systems**, a local company specializing in emergency response equipment. This modification enhances the truck’s capabilities for trench rescue operations, making it a valuable tool for both city-wide and suburban emergencies.
Through the MABAS Box Alarm System, 5-2-4 will be available to assist with trench rescues beyond the city limits, ensuring a coordinated and efficient response across the region. The unit is expected to play a key role in saving lives during complex rescue situations, especially those involving collapsed structures or deep excavations.
The truck previously served with the Chicago Department of Streets and Sanitation before being reconfigured for emergency use. Its presence at the fire show highlighted its potential and the department’s commitment to modernizing its rescue capabilities.
Photos from the event show the unit in its original form, as well as after its recent modifications, offering a clear view of how much has changed to make it ready for high-stakes rescue missions. These upgrades not only improve functionality but also reflect the CFD’s ongoing efforts to stay ahead of the curve in emergency response technology.
