Common types of damage in open pit slopes

(1) Step sinking

(2) sliding

Refers to the phenomenon that the slope rock mass moves down along a certain plane or curved surface in a large range under the action of its own weight or other external loads. This plane or surface is called the sliding surface, and the rock body moving down as a whole is called a sliding body. The failure mechanism is due to the shear force on the slip surface being greater than the shear strength. Generally, the generation of the sliding body to the entire sliding time is long, ranging from several days to several years. Some of them have obvious deformation characteristics before sliding, and some of them have small deformation before sliding, and the signs of sliding are not obvious. According to the shape of the sliding surface, the sliding is divided into a plane sliding, a wedge sliding, and an arc sliding.

Plane sliding. The slope of the local structural plane parallel to the slope slope is consistent with the slope slope. When the inclination angle is smaller than the slope angle and larger than the friction angle, the slope rock mass is prone to slide along the plane of the structural plane.

The arc slides. The sliding surface has a circular arc shape. When the rock is very weak (soil), or the crack of the slope rock is developed, or the rock mass is broken (waste rock pile), the slope is prone to arc sliding.

The wedge slides. When the two structural planes are inclined to the slope surface and the intersection line is exposed on the slope slope, if the inclination angle of the intersection line is larger than the friction angle of the structural surface and smaller than the slope angle, the wedge body slip is likely to occur. Many of the open pit steps in hard rock masses are destroyed in this form.

Due to the complexity of geological conditions, the sliding surface of open pit slopes often appears as a combination of multiple slip surfaces.
