ChargeLab offers software support for orphaned Enel X Way EV chargers

Enel X Way has officially announced the closure of its EV charging operations in the United States and Canada, effective October 11, 2024. This means that all residential JuiceBox chargers will no longer function as smart devices and will revert to basic home chargers. Meanwhile, commercial Enel X Way chargers will lose all functionality once the software is shut down. ChargeLab, a leading provider of backend management software for commercial EV charging networks, is stepping in to help affected users. They are offering to take over compatible commercial chargers in the U.S. and Canada. If you're a site host using Enel X Way chargers, it's crucial to contact ChargeLab as soon as possible before their servers are permanently disabled. JuiceBox first launched in 2013 by eMotorWerks, a startup based in San Carlos, California. The company was acquired by Enel S.p.A., an Italian energy giant, in 2017. Enel X Way became part of Enel’s broader push into North America through EV charging and other clean energy solutions. However, the decision to pull out of the region is due to a strategic shift toward focusing on markets where Enel already has a retail electricity presence — primarily Europe. ChargeLab specializes in hardware-agnostic software that manages EV charging infrastructure at scale. Their platform supports over 100 different charger models from various manufacturers. They've been working closely with Enel X Way on integration testing, even before the official shutdown announcement. “We understand the frustration that comes with only 10 days’ notice,” said Shaun Stewart, President of ChargeLab. “Our team is prioritizing migration for Enel X Way customers. We encourage those impacted to reach out to us immediately.” While migrating to ChargeLab can be complex, especially due to firmware limitations, it offers a viable path forward for commercial users. Residential JuiceBox owners, however, may find the migration process too cumbersome, and we recommend utilities and DERMS aggregators remove them from approved equipment lists for programs like TOU and demand response. Despite Enel X Way's exit, EV adoption continues to grow across North America. Companies like ChargeLab are committed to making EV charging more reliable, scalable, and user-friendly for drivers and operators alike. If you're a commercial site host, don't wait — contact ChargeLab today to explore your options. For more information, call (800) 636-0986 ext. 210.
