The Countryside Fire Protection District (FPD) called for a second alarm hazardous materials unit this morning after a truck trailer overturned in Vernon Hills. According to *The Daily Herald*, the incident caused significant traffic delays on one of central Lake County’s busiest roads.
The accident occurred around 6:20 a.m. on Route 60 at Butterfield Road. Vernon Hills police reported that the truck was turning from southbound Butterfield Road onto eastbound Route 60 when one of its trailers tipped over. No serious injuries were reported, according to Battalion Chief Kevin Wodrich of the Countryside FPD.
The vehicle involved was a Con-way Freight truck carrying two 300-gallon tanks of potassium hydroxide and two 300-gallon tanks of phosphoric acid. The fire department confirmed that some of the chemicals leaked during the incident. A specialized hazardous materials team arrived on the scene to contain the leaks and assist with cleanup efforts.
Traffic was backed up for several hours during the morning rush hour, causing major disruptions for commuters. Emergency crews worked quickly to secure the area and ensure public safety. A heavy wrecker was also brought in to upright the overturned trailer and clear the road.
