The Countryside Fire Protection District (FPD) called for a second alarm hazardous materials unit this morning after a truck trailer overturned in Vernon Hills. According to *The Daily Herald*, the incident caused significant disruption on one of central Lake County’s busiest roads.
A section of Route 60 at Butterfield Road was closed for several hours on Wednesday, causing major traffic delays during the morning rush hour. The accident occurred around 6:20 a.m., and no serious injuries were reported, according to Battalion Chief Kevin Wodrich of the Countryside FPD.
The vehicle involved was a Con-way Freight truck carrying two trailers. One of the trailers tipped over as the truck turned from southbound Butterfield Road onto eastbound Route 60, according to Vernon Hills police. The truck was transporting four 300-gallon tanks—two containing potassium hydroxide and two with phosphoric acid. The tanks leaked, prompting the fire department to deploy a hazardous materials team to contain the spill and assist with cleanup.
Local residents and photographers, including Tim Olk, captured the scene. Several images show the aftermath of the accident, including the overturned trailer, heavy wrecker trucks, and emergency responders working on site. These photos provide a clear view of the scale of the incident and the efforts taken to manage the hazardous materials.
The closure of the road highlighted the potential dangers of transporting hazardous substances through populated areas. Authorities have since reopened the route, but the event serves as a reminder of the importance of safety protocols in commercial transportation.
