On April 28, 2004, at 3:00 PM, the Beijing Hyundai Engine Plant officially launched its new production line, marking a significant milestone in the company's growth. The event featured a powerful and dynamic melody as the first passenger car engine, full of energy, rolled off the newly established production line. This state-of-the-art facility, covering 21,488 square meters, is equipped with the most advanced production technology and management systems in the world. It fully automates the manufacturing of H-Series and D-Series engines for Hyundai Motor, significantly boosting the company’s production capacity to 150,000 units annually.
The opening ceremony was attended by over 100 representatives from Chinese and South Korean government agencies, local committees, and media. Leaders and industry experts praised Beijing Hyundai’s rapid development, noting that since its establishment on October 18, 2002, the company had expanded its annual production capacity from 50,000 to 150,000 units in just 15 months. This achievement placed it among China’s top eight automotive manufacturers. The plant not only supports the production of popular models like Sonata and Elantra but also plays a crucial role in Beijing Hyundai’s “Strategic Concurrent Engineering†plan, aiming to reach 150,000 units in sales by the end of 2004 and expand into global markets.
Mr. Xu Heyi, Chairman of Beijing Hyundai, expressed confidence during the launch, emphasizing the company’s commitment to modern management, skilled workforce, and advanced technology. Mr. Lu Zai-wan, General Manager, highlighted Hyundai’s global strategy, stating that Beijing Hyundai has become one of the most successful examples of international investment due to strong collaboration between China and South Korea. Looking ahead, the company plans to increase its annual production capacity to 300,000 vehicles and 300,000 engines by 2005, with some products being exported back to South Korea.
According to Beijing’s first-quarter economic data, the city saw a GDP growth rate of 13.8%, with vehicle sales rising by 81.3% to 122,000 units and retail sales reaching 7.03 billion yuan—an increase of 16.8%. These figures highlight the strong contribution of the automotive sector to Beijing’s economy. With its ambitious goals and steady progress, Beijing Hyundai is set to continue driving innovation and growth in China’s auto industry. Source: China Automotive New Network.
