On April 28, 2004, at 3:00 PM, a brand-new engine production line was officially launched in a vibrant ceremony, marking a significant milestone for Beijing Hyundai Motor Co., Ltd. The event showcased the seamless flow of passenger car engines along an advanced automated production line, symbolizing the company’s growing capabilities in automotive manufacturing. This new 21,488-square-meter engine plant is equipped with state-of-the-art technology and management systems, fully automating the production of Hyundai's H-Series and D-Series engines.
With an annual capacity of 150,000 units, the plant represents a major step forward in Beijing’s modern industrial development. More than 100 officials from national ministries, Beijing city committees, and media representatives from both China and South Korea attended the official launch. Industry leaders and experts praised Beijing Hyundai for its rapid growth, having expanded from a 50,000-unit annual capacity to 150,000 within just 15 months since its establishment in October 2002. The company has now become one of the top eight car manufacturers in China by production capacity.
Mr. Xu Heyi, Chairman of Beijing Hyundai, expressed confidence during the ceremony, emphasizing that the new engine factory demonstrates the company’s strong technical foundation, skilled workforce, and efficient management system. He highlighted the importance of the plant in supporting popular models like Sonata and Elantra, while also playing a crucial role in achieving the company’s strategic goal of reaching 150,000 units in production and sales for 2004.
Mr. Lu Zai-wan, General Manager of Beijing Hyundai, noted that Hyundai Motors is rapidly expanding into the Chinese market, which is the fastest-growing auto market globally. The company has introduced advanced management practices and successfully positioned its products in the Chinese market. With cutting-edge technology and decades of R&D investment, Hyundai continues to lead in innovation.
The Beijing Municipal Government has provided strong support for the development of the automotive industry, and the collaboration between China and South Korea has made Beijing Hyundai a shining example of successful global investment. Looking ahead, the company plans to increase its annual production capacity to 300,000 vehicles and 300,000 engines by 2005.
According to data from the Beijing Municipal Government, the city’s economy grew by 13.8% in the first quarter of 2004. Vehicle sales reached 122,000 units, up by 81.3%, and retail sales amounted to 7.03 billion yuan, an increase of 16.8%. These figures contributed significantly to the city’s overall economic growth. With its strong momentum, Beijing Hyundai is set to continue driving innovation and success in the Chinese automotive industry.
