Multi-vehicle crash in Wayne, 6-20-20

Excerpts from kcchronicle.com:

A major multi-vehicle collision involving serious injuries took place on Saturday, June 20, 2020, on Dunham Road, north of Army Trail Road in Wayne. Fire Chief John Nixon of the Fox River & Countryside Fire Rescue District described the scene as chaotic and spread across 100 yards of roadway.

The first 911 call was received at 10:20 a.m., and by the time emergency crews arrived, the situation was already out of control. “It was total chaos with multiple victims,” Nixon said. “We immediately started triaging the most severely injured individuals.”

The crash began when a black SUV, traveling southbound on Dunham Road, suddenly stopped and was rear-ended by a red SUV. The black SUV contained a woman and two children, while the red SUV had three occupants. After the initial impact, the red SUV bounced off the black vehicle and collided with a gravel truck before flipping into a ditch. Shortly after, a garbage truck struck the front of the black SUV, causing it to spin off the road and crash into a large tree, trapping the driver and passenger inside.

“The front of the garbage truck doesn’t have much structural protection,” Nixon explained. “The two men inside were pinned when the dashboard collapsed on them. It took nearly 90 minutes to free them, and we spent a total of three hours securing the area. The last victim was transported two hours after the accident.”

The garbage truck driver suffered severe lower-body injuries and was airlifted to Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove. His passenger was taken to a local hospital. The driver of the gravel truck also sustained minor injuries.

Several fire departments, including South Elgin & Countryside Fire Protection District, Carol Stream Fire Department, Elburn and Countryside Fire Protection District, Bartlett Fire Protection District, and St. Charles Fire Department, provided assistance at the scene.
