Excerpts from kcchronicle.com: A multi-vehicle crash that left several people injured occurred on Saturday morning, June 20, 2020, on Dunham Road, north of Army Trail Road in Wayne. Fire Chief John Nixon of the Fox River & Countryside Fire Rescue District described the scene as chaotic, with debris and vehicles scattered over a 100-yard stretch of the road. The first 911 call was received at 10:20 a.m., and when firefighters arrived, they found multiple victims in need of immediate medical attention. “It was complete chaos,†Nixon said. “There were several injured individuals, and we started triaging the most critical cases right away.†The accident began when a black SUV stopped while traveling south on Dunham Road and was struck from behind by a red SUV. The black SUV had a woman and two children inside, while the red SUV had three occupants who suffered minor injuries. After the initial collision, the red SUV bounced off the black SUV and crashed into a gravel truck, flipping over into a ditch. Then, a garbage truck collided with the front of the black SUV, spun off the road, and hit a large tree, trapping its driver and passenger inside. “The front of the garbage truck offers little protection,†Nixon explained. “The two men inside were pinned when the dashboard collapsed on them. It took nearly 90 minutes to free them, and we spent three hours securing the entire scene. The last victim was removed about two hours after the crash.†The garbage truck driver sustained serious injuries to his lower body and was airlifted to Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove. His passenger was taken to a local hospital, while the driver of the gravel truck also had minor injuries. Multiple fire departments, including South Elgin & Countryside, Carol Stream, Elburn, Bartlett, and St. Charles, responded to the scene to assist in the rescue efforts.
