China Daily Online Global News: A fascinating new "visitor" has arrived in New York Harbor. This unusual vessel looks like a giant spider walking across the sea, almost as if it stepped out of a sci-fi movie. In reality, it's the latest innovation from the U.S. Navy's Advanced Research Corporation—a unique catamaran called "Poseidon." Known for its striking design and versatility, this ship is being hailed as a "universal vessel" with a wide range of applications.
According to reports from U.S. media on September 6, the Poseidon resembles a spider, with long floats on either side and pointed ends. These are connected by two arch-shaped brackets, with a high cockpit in the center and a passenger cabin behind it. All these parts are suspended above the water, ensuring no direct contact with the sea during travel or mooring. Even though the U.S. Coast Guard was aware of the unusual craft, they still sent a small patrol boat to check it out when it approached New York.
The Poseidon is a prototype of the Wave Adaptive Modular Vessels (WAM-V) program. Its distinctive shape allows it to adapt to wave movements, conforming to the water’s surface instead of pushing through it. The titanium alloy springs in the brackets help absorb vibrations caused by waves, making the ride smooth even in rough weather. Because it has minimal underwater structure and a shallow draft, it can easily navigate shallow waters without issues.
Another key feature of the Poseidon is its modular design. Every component—floats, brackets, cockpit, and cabin—is easy to transport, store, and assemble. It takes just one hour to put together a 31-meter-long, 16-meter-wide "Sea Spider." This modularity means any part can be swapped out as needed. For instance, a propeller can be replaced with a jet engine, and gasoline engines can be converted to diesel. There are currently three configurations for the passenger cabin, offering seating for 2, 6, or 12 people. When more passengers are needed, the cabin can be raised to the surface.
Despite its lightweight construction, the Poseidon is capable of long-distance travel. It can cover 8,000 kilometers on just 2,000 gallons of fuel, with a top speed of 55.5 km/h. This futuristic ship offers advantages such as long range, low fuel consumption, affordability, ease of use, and minimal environmental impact. As a result, it has promising potential in military operations, civilian use, marine rescue missions, and scientific research.
