Its name comes from its Y-shaped form. This type is commonly used in pressurized lines, steam, liquid, or gas, but can also be applied in vacuum or suction situations. It has low resistance to fluid passage, resulting in low pressure loss. This makes Y-strainers ideal for applications where only small amounts of solid particulates are expected and frequent cleaning is not necessary. Y-strainers are typically used where there is a small amount of material to collect. They can be installed horizontally or vertically. The basket should be at the bottom of the pipe or facing the downward flow direction to collect particles. A Y-strainer can come with a blow-off connection for automatic cleaning. With liquids, Y-strainers have a greater pressure drop than basket strainers because of their size (comparing same sizes). However, with gases, a Y-strainer has a relatively low pressure drop. Installing a strainer before valves and instrumentation can save you costly maintenance and repair. When you pair your Ward Strainers with Ward's soft-seated check valves (or ball valves from other manufacturers), you'll eliminate damaging contaminants. Ward "Y" Strainers are available in a variety of materials and a full range of end connections to accommodate many different services. The "Y" pattern design keeps fluids flowing with minimal obstruction. A Teflon cap seal with optional graphite for higher temperatures prevents leakage.
