Strengthening Concrete Trench Drains: A Long-Lasting Fix

Concrete trench drains are essential in managing water runoff and containing hazardous materials in industrial settings. These structures, often resembling long channels, play a critical role in maintaining safety and operational efficiency. However, over time, they can suffer from various forms of damage, including chemical corrosion, physical wear, and environmental exposure. This deterioration not only weakens the structure but also leads to costly repairs or even full replacement.

Take the example of a battery distribution plant that faced serious issues despite being less than ten years old. The facility had previously used a novolac coating for protection, but this failed, allowing diluted sulfuric acid (H2SO4) with a pH of 1-2 to seep into the concrete. The acid caused severe corrosion, reducing the thickness of the concrete by nearly half in some areas and leading to about 35% structural failure. Without immediate intervention, the damage was expected to lead to complete failure within a year.

To address the problem, HJ3 implemented a comprehensive repair strategy. First, they removed all damaged sections using abrasive blasting. Then, they applied HJ3’s CarbonSeal primer and high-modulus paste to restore the surface. Next, carbon fiber reinforcement fabric was saturated and installed within the trench up to the 2” x 2” shelf. Finally, a chemical-resistant top coat was applied, extending 1” beyond the edge and covering the shelf. This coating is specifically designed to withstand 98% H2SO4, ensuring long-term performance in harsh environments.

Corrosion in concrete is a global issue, costing industries over $6 trillion annually. Replacing entire trenches can be expensive and disruptive, involving significant labor, materials, and downtime. With HJ3’s CarbonSeal system, the facility was able to resume operations within just one week, saving 85% compared to full replacement. The solution not only restored the trench but also provided long-term protection against chemical exposure, ensuring continued safe operation for years.

If your facility needs reliable reinforcement or chemical resistance for its concrete trenches, HJ3’s CarbonSeal system offers a proven, cost-effective solution. Contact our project managers today to learn more about how we can help protect your infrastructure and reduce future maintenance costs.
