Pomway's one-million-ton PTA project is advancing smoothly. According to a report on the 26th, the PTA (pure terephthalic acid) project with an annual output of one million tons—featuring the lowest investment, fastest progress, and over 75% localization of equipment—is currently under construction in China. The Granville PTA project has made steady progress, bringing the goal of full localization of large-scale PTA equipment closer than ever.
The Chongqing Pengwei PTA project, a major petrochemical initiative by the Dongfang Hope Group, stands as a significant milestone for domestic manufacturing. As a private enterprise, the company took on the challenge of approving process designs from domestic design institutes and utilizing locally manufactured equipment. This project marked the first attempt at domesticizing key petrochemical machinery. The project utilizes the domestically developed PTA process technology created by the China Textile Industry Design Institute, which greatly facilitates the localization of critical equipment.
Initially designed for an annual output of 600,000 tons, the project has since been upgraded to 900,000 tons due to enhanced economic scale. With additional design flexibility, the capacity can even reach one million tons. By leveraging domestic production and key equipment manufacturing, the project cost has been significantly reduced, with total investment estimated at approximately 2.644 billion yuan. Notably, the large-scale PTA plant’s process air compressor unit marks the first successful localization after more than 20 imported units in China. This achievement ensures stable and reliable performance while cutting equipment costs substantially.
Currently, several long-cycle devices, confirmed by experts and with clear specifications, have already been ordered for the Chongqing Pengwei PTA project. These include core equipment and supporting systems, all sourced from Chinese manufacturers such as Shaanxi Blower Group, Hangzhou Steam Turbine, Jinxi Chemical Machinery, Jiangsu Nanjing Baosili Titanium, Chengdu Xiangyun Aircraft Accessories, and the Aerospace Science and Technology Power Institute. The large-scale hydrotreating reactor, designed by the China Textile Institute and manufactured by China Erzhong Group, is the first domestically produced large-scale PTA refining reactor.
According to the “Implementation Plan for Accelerating Large-scale Petrochemical Equipment Autonomous Implementation†recently released by the National Development and Reform Commission, the goal during the "Eleventh Five-Year Plan" period was to achieve an autonomy rate of 75% or higher in independently designing and manufacturing large-scale petrochemical equipment, including PTA plants with capacities of 600,000 to 1 million tons per year. Three major PTA projects—Yizheng Chemical Fiber, Jinan Chemical New Materials, and Chongqing Pengwei Petrochemical—have been identified as key initiatives relying on the localization of large-scale PTA equipment.
