Sony's original idea, during the trial, Sony unveiled the mystery: the projector can basically turn any plane into a touch-type display. At the top, it is also equipped with a depth sensor so that the projector can see it already placed on the table and provide information about it in turn. 
The illustrated example includes the object being a cup, wherein the projector can detect it and also sense how deep the cup is. It also seems to be able to identify books and put these books into an interactive version of pictures and animations, thereby making an otherwise boring book more interesting.
Unfortunately, because the projector was created by Sony's future lab, it also means that this may only remain as a prototype, not necessarily an actual product, and for the sake of fairness we do not know if such a device will have Very broad market.
