2-Alarm fire in Des Plaines, 1-5-23>
Larry Shapiro shared this account:
Following numerous 911 calls to the RED Center reporting a significant fire, firefighters from the North Maine Fire Protection District (FPD) were dispatched to an unknown address. Guided by a dispatch header, they traveled less than half a mile to 9320 Noel Street, located in unincorporated Maine Township. Upon arriving at the scene, they found heavy flames erupting from one unit of a four-unit, two-story apartment building. The front of the second unit from the street had been completely obliterated by the fire.
The initial alarm was quickly upgraded to a Working Fire status and later escalated further to a MABAS Box Alarm. Within minutes, the incident was bumped up to a Second Alarm, drawing additional resources from neighboring areas like Glencoe and Lincolnshire.
Firefighters tackled the blaze using multiple handlines and three elevated master streams. By the time I arrived on the scene, most of the fire had already been suppressed. The intense heat and smoke had taken their toll, leaving behind a charred and gutted structure. It was clear that this had been a severe fire, one that would take extensive efforts to fully extinguish and prevent it from spreading to adjacent units.
Attached are several photos captured by Larry Shapiro, offering a glimpse into the intensity and scale of the firefighting operation. These images truly capture the dedication and bravery of the firefighters who worked tirelessly under challenging conditions.
