According to CNOOC Engineering, a 30,000-ton jacket launching barge, developed and invested in by the company, has been officially delivered in Qingdao. This massive vessel is the largest of its kind in Asia and ranks third globally. It is set to play a crucial role in the upcoming launch of the Panyu 30-1 gas field jacket in early March, marking a significant milestone for the project.
The barge measures 235 meters in length, 52.5 meters in width, and 14.25 meters in depth, with a maximum load capacity of 60,000 tons. Designed as an unmanned and unpowered deck barge, it is specifically tailored for offshore oil projects in the South China Sea. The vessel is capable of transporting large structures such as jackets, modules, TLPs (Tension Leg Platforms), and SPARs (Spar Platforms) in deep waters, both domestically and internationally.
The construction of the barge was commissioned by CNOOC Engineering in March 2007, and it was completed in just over 10 months, showcasing the efficiency and technical capabilities of the shipbuilding industry. Jiang Xiyu, President of CNOOC Engineering, emphasized that this barge is a key part of the company's strategy to enhance its fleet, standardize operations, and expand into deepwater oil development. The new vessel significantly improves China’s ability to transport offshore structures and strengthens its competitive edge in the global energy market.
Jin Xiaojian, General Manager of the Engineering Construction Department at CNOOC, highlighted that the timely delivery of the barge ensures smooth progress for the Panyu 30-1 gas field project. Located in the Pearl River Mouth Basin in the South China Sea, the Panyu 30-1 gas field is part of the larger Panyu/Huizhou natural gas joint development project, which is self-developed and funded by CNOOC in the eastern South China Sea.
In June 2006, some of the underwater structures of the Panyu 30-1 jacket were found to be partially deformed after installation. Following extensive analysis, CNOOC decided to entrust the reconstruction of the jacket to its own team, demonstrating the company’s commitment to quality and project control. With this new barge now in service, the future of deepwater offshore projects looks more promising than ever.
