Autodesk Teams with the Fab Foundation to Provide Design Tools to Makers Worldwide

At the Fab 11 conference held at MIT today, Autodesk and the Fab Foundation announced a new partnership, with Autodesk becoming a Fab Sponsor. As part of this collaboration, Autodesk will provide free access to its cloud and mobile design software for all Fab Labs and their members worldwide. With over 500 Fab Labs operating across the globe, this initiative aims to empower makers, students, and entrepreneurs with powerful digital tools.

Samir Hanna, Vice President and General Manager of Autodesk’s Consumer & 3D Printing Group, emphasized the shared vision between Autodesk and Fab Lab. “Digital fabrication is reshaping how we create, innovate, and solve real-world problems,” he said. “By providing the Fab Lab community with top-tier cloud and mobile design tools, we’re helping them bring their ideas to life faster and more efficiently.” Starting today, Fab Labs around the world can access free training and software from Autodesk, including: - **Tinkercad**: A user-friendly, web-based 3D design tool that allows users to quickly create and print 3D models. - **123D Circuits**: A free online platform for designing and simulating electronic circuits using Arduino. - **Fusion 360**: A cloud-based CAD/CAM/CAE solution that integrates design, engineering, and manufacturing in one place. These tools will now be part of the Fab Academy curriculum and added to the Fab Lab inventory list. To support the community, Autodesk will also host an on-site workshop at Fab 11, where attendees can learn how to 3D scan a limb, design a prosthetic, and even make it robotic—all using Autodesk’s free software. In addition to the software, Fab Lab members will receive exclusive benefits, such as a 10% discount on the new Arduino Basic Kit available through Autodesk. Details can be found [here][i]. Sherry Lassiter, President of the Fab Foundation, highlighted the long-standing collaboration between the two organizations. “This global partnership expands our shared mission of empowering makers everywhere,” she said. “With Autodesk’s innovative tools and our global network, we’re building a future where anyone can create, experiment, and solve challenges—no matter where they are.”
