Barrington Countryside FPD update>
For several months, we've been closely following the evolving discussions between the Village of Barrington and the Barrington Countryside Fire Protection District (FPD) regarding their partnership. You can check out our previous coverage here, here, here, here, and here.
Recently, the *Daily Herald* published an article highlighting that the Barrington Countryside FPD is actively seeking to hire new personnel as part of a broader transition plan. This development marks a significant shift in how the district plans to operate independently from the village.
According to Barrington Countryside FPD trustees, the question of whether to split their services with the Barrington Fire Department has moved from "why?" to "how?" This means the fire district — which operates as a separate taxing entity — is now taking concrete steps to build its own team and acquire its own equipment, rather than relying on contracts with the village.
District President Tom Rowan confirmed that requests for proposals have already been issued to recruit 33 employees, including a chief, who will be ready to take over operations from the Barrington Fire Department on January 1st. This move signals a clear effort by the fire district to become self-sufficient.
Originally, the Barrington Fire Department served only the village itself. However, the Barrington Countryside FPD covers a larger area just outside the village, including parts of Barrington Hills, Inverness, Lake Barrington, South Barrington, and unincorporated areas of Cook, Lake, and McHenry counties.
While Fire Station 1 in Barrington will remain under the Barrington Fire Department’s control, a potential split would mean the fire district gains access to Station 2 in Barrington Hills and Station 3. The current agreement between the two agencies outlines an even division of shared equipment, with the process set to begin with a coin flip, according to Rowan.
The decision to end their long-standing contract was announced last fall after district officials expressed frustration over the village's failure to meet their staffing and equipment needs. However, Barrington Village President Karen Darch recently stated that she still believes the relationship can be repaired, emphasizing that there's still time to address any remaining business between the two parties.
Despite this, Rowan remains confident that the next step is simply to determine whether the coin toss will land on "heads" or "tails" to officially begin the equipment division process.
