There was a Level 1 Haz Mat incident at 204 N. Artesian (Artesian and Lake) today. People’s Gas was excavating when they accidentally struck a 4-inch medium-pressure gas line directly beneath the CTA Green Line running along Lake Street. As a result, the CTA had to shut down the elevated train for about 15 minutes while the gas leak was addressed.
Engine 26, Truck 7, Battalion 12, Squad 2, and the Hazardous Incident Team (5-1-1) responded to the scene. Engine 26 deployed a 2.5-inch dry line as a precaution, while Battalion 12 coordinated with the CTA to ensure the tracks were safely shut down. People’s Gas quickly isolated the leaking section of the pipe, preventing any further risk.
