Chicago Heights Box Alarm, 2-11-14

Tim Olk headed south this morning to cover a commercial fire at a glass factory in Chicago Heights. The incident occurred at 1131 Arnold Street, and the scene was quickly swarmed with emergency responders. According to a report from nwi.com: "No one was injured when a fire broke out at a glass factory on Tuesday morning at 1131 Arnold St., according to fire officials." Chicago Heights Fire Chief James Angell explained that firefighters were called around 9 a.m. to Gerresheimer Glass Co. after a furnace malfunction caused molten glass to spill out like lava. Upon arrival, crews immediately began dousing the furnace with water. However, a steam explosion occurred on the third floor, sending molten glass flying and igniting a fire. Firefighters spent approximately 45 minutes battling the flames before they managed to bring it under control. They stayed on-site to assist plant workers in restarting the furnace, ensuring the molten glass didn’t solidify, which could have caused further damage. The facility, which has been operating at the same location since the early 1900s, produces primary glass packaging for pharmaceutical and cosmetic companies. Chief Angell noted that due to the size of the building and the cold weather, additional help was requested from nearby departments. Firefighters from Matteson, Park Forest, Glenwood, Homewood, Flossmoor, Sauk Village, Frankfort, Steger, and Hazel Crest arrived to assist. Meanwhile, local departments in Crete, Richton Park, Crete Township, University Park, and Richton Park Township handled other calls in Chicago Heights. Photos taken by Tim Olk show the intensity of the situation, capturing the smoke and chaos at the industrial site during the winter weather. These images provide a vivid look into the challenges faced by first responders in such conditions.
