Chicago working fire, 12-25-13>
From what I gathered from Eric Haak:
---
Christmas morning turned out to be a hectic day for the fire departments in Chicago's 18th Battalion. They had to deal with two separate alarms just hours apart. The first blaze broke out around 7:30 AM in the 6900 block of South Throop. Not even an hour later, another fire erupted less than a mile away, this time on the 6500 block of South Marshfield. That second fire was reported at 10:10 AM.
I arrived on the scene roughly 25 minutes after the second fire started. By then, thick smoke was still billowing from the roof. The battalion chief overseeing the operation quickly called for additional resources shortly after my arrival, stating that the fire had started in the basement and had spread to the first floor, now threatening the second. The structure involved was a modest 25 x 60-foot two-flat apartment building. Firefighters managed to bring it under control using four lines, all supplied by Engine 116, which was the only unit actively pumping water. The official dispatch for backup came in at 11:05 AM. Ten residents were left without homes due to the incident.
Attached are some photos I took of the scene. The images really capture the intensity of the situation—smoke everywhere, firefighters working tirelessly, and the building looking heavily damaged. It's humbling to see how these crews work through holidays like Christmas to keep everyone safe.
