Chicago working fire, 12-25-13

On Christmas morning, the firefighting teams in Chicago's 18th Battalion had their hands full dealing with two significant fires that broke out just hours apart. The first blaze started around 7:30 AM in the 6900 block of South Throop. Not even an hour later, another fire erupted less than a mile away, on the 6500 block of South Marshfield. This second fire was reported at 10:10 AM. By the time I arrived about 25 minutes later, thick smoke was still billowing from the roof. The battalion chief quickly upgraded the response to a box alarm, noting that the fire had started in the basement and had spread to the first floor, with flames beginning to reach the second. The building was a modest two-story structure, measuring 25 feet by 60 feet, and was home to a duplex. Firefighters relied heavily on Engine 116 to supply water, deploying four lines to combat the flames. The official box alarm call came in at 11:05 AM. Ten residents were left without homes due to this incident. [Photos attached] The images above, taken by Eric Haak, capture the intense efforts of the firefighters as they worked tirelessly to contain the blaze. Despite the holiday, these brave men and women were on the scene, risking everything to protect lives and property. It’s moments like these that remind us of the dedication and sacrifice of our emergency responders during what should be a time of rest and celebration. [Additional photos] These additional photos further illustrate the scale of the fire and the coordinated efforts required to bring it under control. Even in the midst of chaos, there is a sense of camaraderie among the firefighters, as they work together to ensure no detail is overlooked. Their resilience and professionalism are commendable, especially given the circumstances. [More photos] The final set of images shows the aftermath of the fire, highlighting both the damage caused and the determination of those involved in the cleanup and recovery process. It's a poignant reminder of the challenges faced by firefighters year-round, but particularly during holidays when people expect a break from routine. In conclusion, while Christmas morning may have been disrupted for some, the firefighters of Chicago’s 18th Battalion rose to the occasion, demonstrating unwavering commitment to public safety. Their actions not only saved lives but also provided comfort to those affected by offering hope and support in difficult times.
