Extrication response in Buffalo Grove, 8-12-22
At approximately 2:30 PM on August 12, 2022, police officers and firefighters in Buffalo Grove responded to reports of an accident involving a person trapped near the intersection of Auburn Lane and Arlington Heights Road, just north of Lake Cook Road. The caller, a man, reported being pinned under his own truck and provided his location through a cell phone ping.
When responders arrived, they discovered a tractor-trailer positioned in the northbound curb lane of Arlington Heights Road, close to the address mentioned. The truck's driver appeared to have stopped there to inspect or fix what seemed like a mechanical issue. While crawling beneath the vehicle, the truck might have shifted slightly due to its position on a gentle slope. Unfortunately, one of the rear wheels ended up pinning the driver’s foot, leaving him trapped.
Firefighters expressed concerns about both the safety of the rescue operation and the structural stability of the truck. To ensure the man’s safe extraction, they called for additional support in the form of cribbing from Long Grove Squad 55 and Lincolnshire-Riverwoods Squad 51. They also requested an urgent arrival of a heavy-duty wrecker from Hillside Towing to potentially lift the truck off the driver. Shortly after the wrecker arrived, firefighters successfully freed the trapped man using airbags and the cribbing equipment they had brought along. The additional squads were then released from the scene, while the tow truck remained on standby to remove the tractor-trailer.
