Fatal fire in Cicero, 8-1-14>
Larry Shapiro sent this update:
Around 1:30 AM, firefighters responded to a three-story brick residential building on the 5000 block of 30th Street in Cicero. This building reportedly had living quarters in the attic as well. When crews arrived, they found heavy fire raging on the second floor at the rear of the structure, spreading rapidly to the third floor and attic space. Initial reports suggested that all but one resident had been accounted for, though it remained unclear whether the missing individual was present at the time.
An initial interior attack was attempted, but due to increasing fire intensity, firefighters were quickly withdrawn from the building as flames began to breach the roof. A defensive strategy was then implemented, including the deployment of a master stream from Cicero's Truck 1. Around 2:00 AM, the incident was escalated to a Box Alarm, calling in additional resources.
Despite completing primary and secondary searches on the first three floors, crews couldn't access the attic until the main fire was under control. Tragically, a victim was later found in the attic area.
Attached are several images capturing different perspectives of the incident. The first photo shows flames erupting from the attic and roof, vividly illustrating the intensity of the fire. Another image provides a view of the rear of the building, now charred and damaged. The third photo highlights Cicero Truck 1 setting up in front of the building, demonstrating the challenges faced in such tight urban spaces. The fourth image captures the extent of damage to the upper floors, where the attic once stood. There’s also a picture of Cicero Engine 3 responding to its first fire of the night, showcasing the equipment involved. Lastly, one photo reveals the significant structural damage to the roof, much of which had collapsed under the fire's ferocity.
This event serves as a somber reminder of the dangers firefighters face and the importance of fire safety measures in our communities.
