Under the group's comprehensive planning, FAW Group has established a technology center as the core, with other business units actively involved throughout the entire product lifecycle — from planning and design to production preparation, manufacturing, quality assurance, procurement, sales, and after-sales service. This collaborative approach supports FAW’s independent R&D system and fosters a strong innovation culture. A complementary R&D network has been formed across key cities such as Changchun, Tianjin, Wuxi, and Qingdao, creating a scientific and technological framework that emphasizes product technology, development techniques, foundational research, and manufacturing expertise. This has led to a structured R&D model characterized by "production generation, development generation, and preparation generation."
The extensive R&D system provides FAW with robust support for product development. In recent years, FAW has consistently pursued cutting-edge technologies and driven independent innovation. From the launch of China’s first four-valve heavy-duty diesel engine, CA6DL (Aowei Power), to the formation of the J5 platform and the global release of the J6 model, FAW has continuously delivered successful products to the market. Notably, the fifth-generation Aowei heavy-duty commercial vehicles and engines were awarded the Second-Class National Science and Technology Progress Award in 2007, marking the first time a complete vehicle from the domestic automotive industry received this prestigious honor.
With a focus on the three major components — engines, transmissions, and axles — FAW has achieved leading positions in the domestic market. Following the implementation of the new strategy of “scaling up, digital management, and international operations,†FAW has concentrated its efforts on building a self-sufficient and sustainable technology center.
In terms of engine development, FAW has completed a full range of passenger car engines spanning displacements from 1 to 13 liters. For commercial vehicles, FAW’s independently developed diesel engine series are among the best in China. On July 15, 2007, FAW successfully ignited its gasoline direct-injection (GDI) engine, achieving technical parity with international standards. Then, on February 22, 2008, FAW made history by igniting China’s first self-developed V12 engine, demonstrating the country’s mastery of high-end passenger car engine technology.
Regarding transmission development, FAW has independently created advanced automatic transmission systems for both commercial vehicles and passenger cars, filling a gap in the market for domestically developed intellectual property. The 10209 gearbox and AMT technology used in the J6 model are on par with global standards, maintaining a leadership position over similar domestic products for over two decades.
In axle research, FAW has developed a wide range of axles suitable for light, medium, and heavy-duty vehicles, including models like the 300-wheel side speed reduction bridge, 485 through bridge, and 498 single-stage speed reduction bridge. These axles outperform domestic counterparts in terms of speed, gear ratio, braking force, noise control, and efficiency.
