In 2007, the truck market experienced a period of robust growth, with both production and sales surpassing 2 million units. The heavy truck segment emerged as the primary driver of this expansion, showing consistent year-on-year growth in production and sales. Meanwhile, the light and micro-truck segments saw slower growth, while China Card—once a major player—faced a decline after a brief rebound.
According to data from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers, total truck production reached 2,157,300 units in 2007, reflecting a 23.07% increase compared to the previous year. Sales totaled 2,144,500 units, up by 28.85%. This marked a strong performance across the sector, especially for heavy trucks.
Heavy trucks enjoyed a surge in demand starting in March 2007, with three consecutive months seeing over 50,000 units sold in a single month. April recorded the highest monthly sales in history for the segment. However, the second half of the year brought a slowdown, with only September recording sales above 40,000 units. Despite this, the heavy truck market still outperformed the previous year, albeit with a slight deceleration.
Total production of heavy trucks in 2007 was 489,900 units, up 61.36% year-on-year, while sales reached 487,500 units, an increase of 58.64%. Among the various categories, heavy trucks with a total mass exceeding 32 tons showed the fastest growth at 208.51%, with 1,885 units sold. Trucks weighing between 19–26 tons remained the top-selling category, with 43,400 units sold, accounting for 46.63% of total heavy truck sales. Trucks in the 26–32 ton range also saw rapid growth, selling 31,700 units, up 102.87% year-on-year. Semi-trailer tractors also performed well, with 177,800 units sold, a 91.86% increase compared to 2006.
Major manufacturers like China National Heavy Duty Truck Co., Ltd. achieved significant growth, selling 99,800 units, up 65.78%. FAW followed closely with 96,200 units, a 47.32% increase. Other companies such as Dongfeng, Shaanxi Auto, Foton, SAIC Iveco Hongyan, and North Mercedes-Benz also saw strong gains, with some reporting double-digit growth.
Meanwhile, the China Card segment faced challenges due to product restructuring, leading to a temporary drop in market share. However, improved quality and features helped stabilize sales in the first half of the year, with a market share of around 11%. Later in the year, however, sales declined again. Total production for China Card was 234,600 units, with 236,700 sold, representing increases of 16.16% and 17.24%, respectively.
Within the China Card market, sales of medium-sized trucks (10–12 tons) dropped significantly, down 48.44% year-on-year. In contrast, the 12–14 ton segment saw explosive growth, with 940,000 units sold, up 136.94%. Dongfeng and FAW maintained their dominance in this area, with strong performances in sales.
Light and micro-trucks continued to grow steadily throughout the year, though micro-trucks saw a dip in the second half. Light truck production reached 1,132,200 units, up 18.31%, while sales were 1,104,900, up 16.19%. Micro-truck production totaled 309,700 units, with 315,400 sold, showing increases of 3.87% and 8.36%, respectively.
Among light trucks, those in the 4.5–6 ton range saw the most significant growth, with 126,000 units sold, up 40.73%. The 1.8–3.5 ton segment, though growing more slowly at 18.49%, had the largest volume, with 577,100 units sold, making up 57.41% of the total.
Fukuda led the light truck market with 319,600 units sold, up 11.04%. Dongfeng and JAC followed with 120,700 and 106,300 units, respectively. In the micro-card segment, Chang’an, SAIC-GM-Wuling, and Hafei dominated, with cumulative sales of 76,900, 56,200, and 41,900 units, respectively.
