In 2007, the truck market experienced robust growth, with both production and sales surpassing 2 million units. The industry saw a consistent rise in growth rates, driven primarily by heavy trucks, which became the key driver of development. However, China Card (light and micro trucks) faced challenges, showing a decline after an initial rebound, while growth in light and micro truck segments slowed down.
According to the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers, total truck production reached 2,157,300 units in 2007, up 23.07% year-on-year, and sales hit 2,144,500 units, rising 28.85% compared to the previous year.
Heavy trucks had a strong performance throughout the year, especially in the first half, with three consecutive months of over 50,000 units sold. April marked the highest single-month sales ever recorded for heavy trucks. Although the second half of the year saw a slowdown, heavy truck sales still outperformed the same period last year, with a slight reduction in growth rate.
Cumulative production of heavy trucks in 2007 was 489,900 units, a 61.36% increase from 2006, and sales totaled 487,500 units, up 58.64% year-on-year. Among the different weight categories, trucks with a gross mass over 32 tons showed the fastest growth at 208.51%, selling 1,885 units. Trucks weighing between 19-26 tons remained the best-selling segment, with 43,400 units sold, accounting for 46.63% of total heavy truck sales. Trucks in the 26-32 ton range also saw rapid growth, with 31,700 units sold, up 102.87% year-on-year. Semi-trailer tractors also performed well, with 177,800 units sold, representing a 91.86% increase.
Major manufacturers like China National Heavy Duty Truck Co., Ltd. and FAW saw significant growth. CNHTC sold 99,800 units, up 65.78%, while FAW sold 96,200 units, up 47.32%. Other companies such as Shaanxi Auto and Foton continued to grow rapidly, with increases of 84.36% and 77.43%, respectively.
China Card, on the other hand, struggled with declining market share due to product restructuring. Despite a recovery in the first half of the year, sales dropped again in the latter half. In 2007, China Card produced 234,600 units and sold 236,700 units, up 16.16% and 17.24% respectively. Sales of medium-sized trucks (10–12 tons) fell sharply by 48.44%, but sales of 12–14 ton trucks surged by 136.94%.
Dongfeng and FAW dominated the light truck market, with Dongfeng selling 73,700 units and FAW selling 58,700 units. Meanwhile, young card sales grew steadily, while micro-card sales declined slightly in the second half of the year.
Light trucks in the 4.5–6 ton range saw strong growth of 40.73%, while smaller light trucks (1.8–3.5 tons) maintained a stable growth rate of 18.49%, accounting for the largest portion of sales. Fukuda led in light truck sales with 319,600 units, followed by Dongfeng and JAC.
In the micro-card segment, Chang’an, SAIC-GM-Wuling, and Hafei were the top performers, with cumulative sales of 76,900, 56,200, and 41,900 units respectively. Overall, 2007 was a mixed year for the Chinese truck market, with heavy trucks leading the way and light and micro trucks facing challenges.
