I recently stumbled upon some old photos while going through my archives, and among them were these four images showcasing Glencoe fire engines at work over the years. They were shared with me by Larry Shapiro, who has been kind enough to let me use them for this post.
The first image dates back to what must have been the late 1980s or early 1990s. It features Glencoe Engine 87, a classic American LaFrance 900 Series rig, working alongside Winnetka's impressive mid-ship American LaFrance aerial ladder. The scene is one of coordinated effort, with both engines contributing to the firefighting operation. Larry's caption notes that this was taken decades ago, and it’s fascinating to see how firefighting equipment has evolved since then.
Fast forward to more recent times, and we see Glencoe Engine 30 in action. In the second photo, Engine 30, a Pierce Saber, is parked at another fire scene. The rig looks modern yet purposeful, ready to tackle whatever challenges come its way. The attention to detail in Larry's photography is evident here, capturing not just the machinery but also the environment around it.
The third image takes us even closer to the present day, with Glencoe Engine 30 once again in the spotlight. This time, it’s shown using a deck gun to douse flames during a fire incident in 2013. The power and precision of the equipment are clear, as is the skill of the firefighters operating it. It’s a reminder of the critical role that technology plays in modern firefighting operations.
Finally, we have an image from 2016 featuring Glencoe Engine 30, now sporting an E-ONE Typhoon model. The rig looks sleek and capable, embodying the latest advancements in firefighting technology. The background suggests a busy scene, with other emergency vehicles and personnel working together to bring the situation under control. Larry’s note reminds us that this photo captures a moment in time, part of the ongoing story of how Glencoe’s fire department has adapted and grown over the years.
These photos offer a glimpse into the evolution of firefighting equipment and practices in Glencoe. They highlight not only the changes in technology but also the dedication and professionalism of the firefighters who continue to serve their community. It’s inspiring to see how these machines have become more sophisticated while maintaining their core mission of protecting lives and property.
