M&E at AU: Studios empowered to create more content, faster in the cloud>
In the ever-evolving landscape of entertainment and gaming, studios and developers are constantly under pressure to deliver captivating content at an accelerated pace. The demand is clear: more stories, more games, and faster production cycles—all while managing lean teams. In the age of streaming, audiences and players are just a click away from switching to another service if they're not engaged. This competitive environment requires not only creative brilliance but also operational efficiency.
To thrive in this fast-paced, always-on world, businesses need to embrace both innovation and productivity. Cloud computing plays a crucial role in achieving this balance by fostering collaboration and streamlining workflows. At Autodesk, our mission is to equip creators with the tools they need to reach their full potential. At Autodesk University 2022, we're thrilled to unveil our latest advancements aimed at making collaboration smoother, more open, and universally accessible.
One of our key initiatives is the development of Autodesk Flow, a new media and entertainment industry cloud designed to unify workflows and data across the entire production pipeline. The challenges of coordinating diverse teams and technologies across multiple locations are immense, especially when dealing with massive datasets comprising thousands of assets and versions. Our goal is to create centralized asset management systems that ensure continuity throughout a project’s lifecycle.
Imagine a centralized hub where all project information resides and can be accessed and shared seamlessly by everyone involved. This vision is becoming a reality through Autodesk Flow, which aims to harmonize processes and data flow across the entire production cycle.
Our efforts aren’t limited to downstream operations; we’re also enhancing upstream production workflows. Take Moxion, for instance—a powerful cloud-based platform for digital dailies. Moxion enables raw footage from the set to be reviewed instantly by anyone, anywhere. This tool significantly reduces the inefficiencies caused by fragmented data systems and repetitive tasks. When paired with ShotGrid for project management, production teams experience unprecedented levels of connectivity and productivity.
Amazon Studios, the production arm of Prime Video, is reimagining its operations with a '6th generation Studio.' They’re transitioning many aspects of production and post-production to the cloud, leveraging tools like ShotGrid and Moxion to connect their pipeline virtually in real-time. Eric Iverson, Director of Product Strategy at Amazon Studios, notes, "These solutions are transforming how we handle vast amounts of content, ensuring that every asset is maintained properly and ready for new projects."
Beyond technical innovations, we’re committed to driving the industry forward through open standards. A flexible cloud infrastructure fosters better collaboration when data flows freely and interoperably. That’s why we’re actively contributing to open-source technologies like RV, which empowers artists to collaborate on high-resolution images in real-time. By joining forces with industry leaders such as Sony and DNEG, we’re advancing the Open Review Initiative to establish a unified, open-source toolkit for reviewing and approving content.
Additionally, we’re integrating Bifrost with Maya USD to allow artists to craft USD assets using the Bifrost graph. We’re also supporting MaterialX, Open Color IO, gITF, and Open Timeline IO, among others, to transition the industry toward openness and collaboration.
Maya remains a cornerstone of 3D animation and visual effects, trusted by major studios worldwide. To make content creation more inclusive, we’ve introduced Maya Creative, a more affordable version of Maya. Through our Flex pay-as-you-go model, creatives can access the power of Maya without upfront costs. This flexibility allows smaller studios to scale their teams efficiently, reducing stress during peak periods.
Whether you’re a solo artist, an indie studio, or a large production house, we’re here to support your journey with tools and workflows that bring your ideas to life. Join us at Autodesk University 2022 to discover how we’re reshaping the future of content creation.
