**Site Bite: Sizing an Evaporator Coil at JFK Airport**
Join James Filauro, our NY-area Account Manager, and me, Jack Kessler, as we take you behind the scenes on a recent coil job that brought us to New York’s busiest airport—JFK. This was my first time on a real jobsite, and it turned out to be one of the most exciting experiences I’ve had so far in my internship.
The task? Sizing an evaporator coil located inside the control tower, which is no small feat. The process started with a long security check and a drive across the tarmac, where planes were constantly taking off and landing. It was a bit nerve-wracking for a new intern like me, but also incredibly thrilling.
Once we arrived at the control tower, we had to wait for another escort to get inside. There was some ongoing construction, so we took a temporary elevator to reach the unit. When we finally got there, we found the evaporator coil had already been removed—but the original Trane chilled water coil was still in place.
James used his experience to determine the size of the missing evaporator coil based on the dimensions of the existing chilled water coil. I was taking detailed notes, learning how to approach such situations on the job.
One of the biggest challenges was figuring out the connection locations for the evaporator coil. The mechanical contractor on site insisted on exact measurements, so we climbed into the unit and measured the existing holes on the side panel. With that information, we could accurately replicate the original setup.
It was a great reminder of the importance of both technical expertise and hands-on problem-solving. As an intern, it was an incredible opportunity to see how professionals handle real-world challenges. I’m grateful for the chance to be part of this team and learn from someone as experienced as James.
This was more than just a job—it was a lesson in perseverance, attention to detail, and teamwork. And as for me, I’m ready for the next adventure.
