September 30, 2021—Team CERBERUS, which includes the indoor drone company Flyability, has emerged victorious in DARPA’s three-year Subterranean Challenge. The Subterranean (SubT) Challenge was first announced by DARPA in 2018. The goal of the competition was to develop innovative technologies that could assist in underground operations—essentially, to get teams of robots doing useful work in tough underground environments. This challenge aimed to push the boundaries of autonomous robotics in spaces that are difficult for humans to access. The competition tested technology across both natural and human-made underground environments, such as caves, tunnels, sewers, mines, and urban subways. These settings were designed to mimic real-world challenges that emergency responders, miners, and inspectors might face. “Flyability is proud to be part of the CERBERUS team, which won the DARPA SubT Challenge,†said Adrien Briod, Co-Founder and CTO at Flyability. “Our mission is to turn innovation into practical solutions that keep people out of harm’s way. Robotics should be used to protect, not endanger.†DARPA held several events between 2019 and 2021, including Tunnel and Urban Events, to evaluate the progress of competing teams. A planned Cave Event in 2020 was canceled due to the pandemic. The final event took place last week at the Louisville Mega Cavern, a massive former limestone mine that now serves as a unique venue for testing robotic systems. In the final round, teams had to navigate complex environments combining elements from previous events—simulated mines, urban infrastructure, and cave-like structures. Robots had to deal with visual degradation, like smoke, while searching for objects known as "artifacts." Each artifact found and accurately located earned one point. Team CERBERUS claimed victory by locating 23 artifacts out of 40. Team CSIRO Data61 also scored 23 points but was slightly slower in reporting the final item, allowing CERBERUS to win. Team MARBLE finished third with 18 points. Dr. Kostas Alexis, Team CERBERUS’ leader, shared that their strategy centered around combining legged and flying robots. “We focused on this vision from the beginning, and we developed our own hardware for both types of systems. While it was time-consuming, it gave us a unique advantage,†he explained. The SubT Challenge pushed the limits of autonomy and robotics in underground settings. The final teams showcased cutting-edge technology that could revolutionize industries like mining, wastewater inspection, and search and rescue. These advancements have the potential to make dangerous tasks safer and more efficient. Team CERBERUS used four ANYmal C robots during the final event.
