Towable Electromagnetic Sweepers for Airport Runways

Airport Foreign Object Debris (FOD) poses a major threat to aviation safety and costs the industry over $4 billion annually in damages and maintenance. FOD includes any object that can cause harm to aircraft or personnel, such as metal fragments, stones, or even small pieces of equipment. These hazards can lead to tire punctures, engine damage, or even catastrophic failures during critical phases like takeoff and landing.

To address this growing concern, Bunting has developed a specialized solution: the Towable Electromagnetic Sweeper (model EMRS24). Designed for efficient removal of ferrous debris from airport runways, these sweepers are particularly effective in environments where traditional cleaning methods may not be sufficient. They are especially useful in high-traffic areas where metal particles can accumulate and pose long-term risks.

Bunting is a global leader in magnetic separation technology, offering a wide range of products including eddy current separators, metal detectors, and electrostatic separators. With manufacturing facilities in the U.S., UK, and other key locations, Bunting ensures quality, reliability, and innovation across all its products.

The Towable Electromagnetic Sweeper is engineered to remove ferrous debris from various surfaces, such as runways, roads, ports, and large industrial spaces. It features a powerful electromagnetic block capable of lifting both small and large metal objects. This makes it an essential tool for maintaining runway safety and reducing the risk of FOD-related incidents.

These sweepers are designed to be attached to the rear of a vehicle, such as a service truck or SUV, making them highly versatile and easy to deploy. The unit includes two durable wheels and a simple tow hitch for quick setup. As it moves along the surface, the electromagnetic block attracts and holds ferrous debris, which can then be released when needed.

Operators can control the magnet from inside the vehicle, allowing for seamless operation without leaving the cab. The system is built for outdoor use and operates efficiently at speeds between 5 and 6 mph. Available in multiple widths, the sweepers can be customized to fit specific site requirements.

For an airport in Indonesia, Bunting provided three custom-built models with a magnetic width of 2440mm each. Each unit weighs around 1500 kg and is powered by a 220VAC generator combined with a gasoline-powered Honda engine. A push-button control panel allows for on/off functionality and auto-reverse to release captured debris. A rotating flash beacon indicates the operational status of the magnet.

"We design and build these sweepers to meet the unique needs of airports worldwide," says Phil Tree, Bunting's Technical Sales Manager. "They provide a reliable and effective way to keep runways clean and safe, preventing costly damage to aircraft."
