Fatal crash in Arlington Heights, 3-10-14
A series of 911 calls were received by Northwest Central Dispatch around noon on Monday regarding a rollover accident on the 1600 block of N. Rand Road in Arlington Heights. Due to the location being near the border of Arlington Heights and Prospect Heights, both fire departments responded with full crews after it became clear that multiple people were involved and several were trapped.
Five vehicles were reported to be involved in the crash. Two drivers required rescue from their vehicles, with one handled by Arlington Heights units and the other by Prospect Heights firefighters. At the time of the incident, only one of the four Arlington Heights ambulances was available, prompting additional units to be dispatched from Prospect Heights, Palatine, Rolling Meadows, and Des Plaines.
One of the drivers did not survive the crash. Emergency responders worked quickly to free those trapped, with multiple agencies collaborating on the scene. Firefighters from both departments were seen working together to extract victims and stabilize the area.
Photos from the scene show the severity of the crash, with one vehicle appearing to have gone airborne after hitting a minivan. Firefighters from Prospect Heights Engine 9 were among the first on the scene, while others assisted in extricating victims from damaged cars. One vehicle’s engine was even found in the middle of the street, highlighting the force of the impact.
Witnesses reported that one of the vehicles, a pickup truck, was traveling at high speed in the wrong lane before the accident occurred. The scene was chaotic, with emergency crews working side by side to help those injured.
