Fatal crash in Arlington Heights, 3-10-14
A series of 9-1-1 calls were received by Northwest Central Dispatch around noon on Monday regarding a rollover accident on the 1600 block of N. Rand Road in Arlington Heights. Due to the incident occurring near the border of the Arlington Heights and Prospect Heights jurisdictions, both fire departments sent full crews after it was determined that multiple people were involved and several were trapped.
Five vehicles were reported to be involved in the crash. Two drivers required extrication, with one handled by Arlington Heights units and the other by Prospect Heights firefighters. At the time of the incident, only one of the four available Arlington Heights ambulances was on duty, prompting additional units to be dispatched from Prospect Heights, Palatine, Rolling Meadows, and Des Plaines.
One of the drivers did not survive the accident. Emergency responders worked quickly to free the injured and transport them to nearby hospitals. Firefighters from both departments collaborated on the scene, using specialized tools to extract those trapped inside the wreckage.
Photos taken by Larry Shapiro show the extent of the damage, including a vehicle that appears to have gone airborne after striking a minivan. The images also capture emergency crews arriving, checking on victims, and working together to manage the situation. One photo shows a car's engine ejected into the street, while another highlights the teamwork between Prospect Heights and Arlington Heights firefighters during the extrication process.
Witnesses suggest that one of the vehicles may have been traveling at high speed in the wrong lane before the crash occurred. Both departments deployed significant resources, with Arlington Heights sending one engine, a tower ladder, one ambulance, two squads, and several chief officers. Prospect Heights responded with two engines, an ambulance, and additional command staff.
