On September 8, 2019, the New York Jets kicked off their football season with a memorable game against the Buffalo Bills. What made this game particularly special? Well, we at Finishing Systems had the privilege of playing a key role in making it unforgettable. The Jets joined forces with Avocados from Peru, a major player in the avocado industry, to create a spectacular event featuring the world's largest guacamole bowl—weighing a whopping 9,000 pounds.
This massive stainless steel guacamole bowl, crafted by Airside Inc., stood at 9 feet tall and 5 feet wide. It was designed to serve a vast crowd during the game, and Avocados from Peru generously provided fresh guacamole for all attendees. Our team at Finishing Systems was responsible for preparing this extraordinary piece of equipment through a meticulous blasting process using glass impact beads and Starblastâ„¢ abrasives.
The stainless steel bowl underwent a two-step blasting procedure involving both Starblastâ„¢ abrasives and glass bead blasting. This method ensured the surface achieved a smooth, polished finish while also removing any impurities or imperfections. The Starblastâ„¢ abrasives, composed of tiny Staurolite sand grains, proved highly effective for cleaning and smoothing metal surfaces without generating excessive dust. Meanwhile, the glass beads offered a gentler touch, ideal for achieving a softer, more refined finish.
As you can see in the images below, the pre-blasting stage left some roughness on the surface, but after our treatment, the bowl emerged with a sleek and professional look ready for its big debut.
