Regardless of what you call them—e-bike, electric bicycle, eBike, electric bike, or E-bike—one thing is clear: the e-bike is revolutionizing the transportation industry. More people are purchasing and commuting via electric bikes now than ever before. One of the most crucial factors when considering the purchase of an e-bike is its range. Just how far can the e-bike you're eyeing really go on a single charge?

The longest-range e-bike currently available is from Delfast bikes. It holds the Guinness World Record for the longest-range e-bike on a single charge, clocking in at 228 miles. With updated software on the latest model, the Top 3.0i has achieved an impressive 232 miles. But how does this translate to real-world conditions? Can you gauge the potential range of an e-bike based solely on the volts and amp hours listed by manufacturers?

The battery, controller, motor, and various components all play a role in determining the range you can achieve. Together, they dictate your speed, the level of pedal assist you receive, and can even provide an estimated range based on those factors. However, when it comes to answering the question of how far an e-bike can go, the battery capacity is the key factor. Specifically, the volts, watts, and amp hours are the defining elements.

The Voltage of the Battery

The first characteristic to consider is the voltage of the battery. This parameter is typically expressed in volts (V). Most e-bike companies opt for 36V or 48V batteries. These mass-produced batteries are generally more affordable. However, as with many technological products, you get what you pay for. A lower voltage battery won't provide the range many riders are seeking.

An e-bike equipped with a 36V/48V battery offers moderate power to assist the cyclist's pedaling. Uphill terrain might feel underpowered, and speed is also limited with this type of battery. If you're looking for an e-bike that is both powerful and fast, it's best to focus on models equipped with higher voltage batteries.

E-bikes with 52V batteries are significantly more powerful, faster, and more efficient. Efficiency is critical in extending the range of an e-bike. However, as we'll discuss later, other factors also influence the range of an e-bike. While 52V batteries are more costly, the higher voltage ensures a more enjoyable ride thanks to the available power and speed.

It’s worth investing upfront in an e-bike with a high-voltage battery system. Delfast uses a 72V lithium-ion battery in its high-end TOP 3.0i e-bike. The 72V battery makes the Delfast e-bike the fastest in the world. The large battery size allows for more power with the use of a 3,000W motor. Naturally, it’s also the longest-range e-bike available.

The Amp-Hours Value of a Battery

If the voltage of the battery determines the speed and power of an e-bike, what ultimately dictates the range? Here, we turn to another parameter often referred to as amp-hours (Ah).

When the motor is operational, it draws an electric current from the battery. This current is measured in amperes (Amps or A) and relates to the flow of electrons in the motor coils. The higher the amp value, the stronger the electron flux becomes. Both voltage and current define the power of the motor since power in watts (W) equals voltage multiplied by amperes.

The amp-hours value refers to the fixed number of amperes the battery can sustain over an hour. Typical values range from 10Ah to 20Ah. This is essentially a measure of the battery's capacity. A battery with a 10Ah capacity can sustain 20A for half an hour or 5A for two hours. The larger the capacity, the longer the e-bike can run on a single charge.

Batteries for Long-Range E-Bikes

As mentioned, a long-range e-bike requires a battery with a high capacity. This isn't always easy. High-capacity batteries tend to be bulkier and much heavier. Standard lithium-ion batteries weighing 6-8 lbs typically offer a range of around 20 miles—clearly not a long-range e-bike. If your e-bike relies solely on throttle mode, the range will decrease further since you won't be pedaling.

A long-range e-bike is usually equipped with a battery of at least 20Ah and 52V, providing a range of about 100 miles with a 1,000W motor. New e-bike buyers should opt for the highest voltage and capacity battery possible within their budget. Three important factors to consider are:

  • Size: High-capacity e-bike batteries are larger and more cumbersome. Ensure your chosen frame and bike can accommodate the battery.
  • Weight: High-capacity batteries are heavier. If you need to carry your e-bike upstairs, this is a significant consideration.
  • Cost: High-capacity batteries are more expensive. Depending on your intended use, a high-capacity battery may not be essential. If you plan to use your e-bike primarily for commuting, estimate the distance of your daily round trip. For shorter commutes, a conventional battery with a capacity between 10Ah and 20Ah may suffice.

The Best in Range

Our long-range e-bike, the TOP 3.0i, doesn’t compromise on battery quality. It uses a 72V 48Ah lithium-ion battery that surpasses the specifications of other e-bike batteries. This battery enables a top speed of 50 miles per hour and an outstanding range of 200 miles.

If you’re looking for an e-bike that performs exceptionally well in nearly all conditions, the TOP 3.0i is ideal. It functions flawlessly as an off-road mountain e-bike, allowing you to cover vast distances through the countryside. It’s the perfect commuter for those seeking long-range capabilities. It’s also the crossover of choice for transitioning from street to trail, or commuter to after-hours fun.
