No matter what you call it or how you write it—e-bike, electric bicycle, eBike, electric bike, or E-bike—one thing remains clear: the e-bike is revolutionizing the transportation industry. More and more people are embracing electric bicycles for commuting and leisure rides alike. When considering purchasing an e-bike, one of the most critical factors is its range. How far can the e-bike you're interested in actually take you on a single charge?

Currently, the e-bike with the longest range on the market is from Delfast Bikes. This model holds the Guinness World Record for the longest range on a single charge, covering an impressive 228 miles. With the latest software update on the newest version—the Top 3.0i—it has even managed to reach an astonishing 232 miles! But how realistic is it to expect such a range under normal riding conditions? And can you predict the range of an e-bike simply by looking at the volts and amp hours listed on a manufacturer's website?

The battery, controller, motor, and various other components all play a role in determining the range you can achieve. These elements collectively influence your speed, the level of pedal assistance, and even provide an estimated range based on those factors. However, the single most important factor in determining range boils down to the battery capacity—volts, watts, and amp hours.

The Voltage of the Battery

The first characteristic to focus on is the voltage of the battery. This is typically expressed in Volts (V). Most e-bike manufacturers use batteries with voltages of either 36V or 48V. These mass-produced batteries tend to be relatively affordable, but as with many technological products, you get what you pay for. A lower voltage battery will likely not meet the range expectations of many riders.

An e-bike equipped with a 36V/48V battery offers moderate power to assist the cyclist while pedaling. On hilly terrain, riders might find the power lacking. Similarly, the speed achievable with such a battery is relatively modest. If you're looking for an e-bike that combines power and speed, it's best to opt for models equipped with higher voltage batteries.

Batteries with 52V offer significantly more power, speed, and efficiency. Efficiency plays a crucial role in extending the range of an e-bike. However, as we'll discuss later, other parameters also affect the range. While 52V batteries are more expensive, the higher voltage translates into a more enjoyable ride due to the power and speed available.

Investing upfront in an e-bike with a high-voltage battery system is a wise decision. Delfast uses a 72V Lithium-ion battery in their high-end TOP 3.0i e-bike. The use of a 72V battery makes the Delfast e-bike the fastest in the world, thanks to the 3,000W motor. Of course, it's also the longest-range e-bike on the market.

The Amp-Hours Value of a Battery

If voltage determines the speed and power of an e-bike, what truly defines the range? Here, we turn to another parameter known as Amp-Hours (Ah). When the motor is operating, it draws an electric current from the battery. This current is measured in Amperes (Amps or A) and represents the flow of electrons in the motor coils. The higher the Amp value, the stronger the electron flow becomes. Both voltage and current contribute to the motor's power, as power in Watts (W) equals voltage multiplied by amperes.

The Amp-Hours value indicates the fixed number of Amperes the battery can sustain over the course of an hour. Typical values range from 10Ah to 20Ah, making this a measure of the battery's capacity. For example, a battery with a 10Ah capacity can supply 20A for half an hour or 5A for two hours. The greater the capacity, the farther the e-bike can travel on a single charge.

Batteries for Long-Range e-Bikes

As noted earlier, a long-range e-bike requires a battery with a high capacity. Achieving this isn't always straightforward. High-capacity batteries are bulkier and significantly heavier. Standard Lithium-ion batteries weighing around 6-8 pounds typically provide a range of about 20 miles—far from qualifying as a long-range e-bike. If your e-bike operates solely in throttle mode, the range will decrease further.

A long-range e-bike generally features a battery with at least 20Ah and 52V, enabling a range of approximately 100 miles with a 1,000W motor. New e-bike buyers should select the battery with the highest voltage and capacity possible within their budget. Three key factors to consider include:

  • Size: High-capacity e-bike batteries are larger and more cumbersome. Ensure your chosen frame and bike can accommodate it.
  • Weight: High-capacity batteries are heavier. If you need to carry your e-bike up stairs, this is an important consideration.
  • Price: High-capacity batteries are more expensive. Depending on your intended use, a high-capacity battery may not be essential. If your primary use is commuting, estimate the distance of your daily round trip. For shorter commutes, a conventional battery with a capacity between 10Ah and 20Ah might suffice.

The Leader of the Pack for Range

Our long-range e-bike, the TOP 3.0i, doesn't compromise on battery quality. It uses a 72V 48Ah Lithium-ion battery, far surpassing the specifications of other e-bike batteries. This battery enables a top speed of 50 miles per hour and an incredible range of 200 miles.

If you're seeking an e-bike that performs exceptionally well in virtually all conditions, the TOP 3.0i is your ideal choice. It functions flawlessly as both an off-road mountain e-bike and a commuter, allowing you to cover vast distances across the countryside. Whether you're transitioning from street to trail or balancing work with weekend adventures, the TOP 3.0i is the ultimate crossover.
