The research team, led by a renowned painter from the State Key Laboratory of Engineering Plastics at the Institute of Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences, has introduced an innovative natural nano-material developed in China—montmorillonite. This clay mineral, naturally produced in China, is uniformly dispersed within various polymers to create advanced nanoplastics.
The researchers have successfully developed a range of nano-plastics based on different materials such as polyamide, polyethylene, polystyrene, epoxy resin, and silicone rubber. Their efforts have led to the industrial production of certain nano-plastic products, with five invention patents granted to the team.
Testing has shown that these nano-plastics exhibit remarkable physical and mechanical properties, including high strength, excellent heat resistance, and a low specific gravity. Additionally, because the nanoparticles are smaller than the wavelength of visible light, the resulting materials maintain high transparency and a glossy finish. Some of the materials demonstrate wear resistance that is 27 times greater than brass and seven times higher than steel.
According to reports, due to their low oxygen permeability, some nano-plastics also possess flame-retardant and self-extinguishing properties. They also offer excellent processability, particularly in the development of injection-grade ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene, which has solved a long-standing challenge in the international polymer industry.
Nanoplastics hold great potential for use in high-performance tubing, automotive and mechanical components, electronic and electrical parts, and packaging materials for beer cans, meat, and dairy products. With their superior performance and versatile applications, these materials are set to revolutionize multiple industries in the coming years.
