The research team, led by a renowned painter from the State Key Laboratory of Engineering Plastics at the Institute of Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences, has made significant progress in developing a natural nano-material produced in China—montmorillonite. This clay mineral, known for its unique nano-scale properties, is uniformly dispersed within various polymers to create advanced nanoplastics.
Through extensive research, the team has developed a wide range of nano-plastics based on materials such as polyamide, polyethylene, polystyrene, epoxy resin, and silicone rubber. These innovations have not only enabled industrial-scale production of certain nano-plastics but also earned the team five invention patents, highlighting their technological breakthroughs.
Testing results show that these nano-plastics exhibit remarkable physical and mechanical properties, including high strength, excellent heat resistance, and a low specific gravity. Moreover, due to the nanoscale size of the particles, which is smaller than the wavelength of visible light, the materials maintain high transparency and a glossy finish. Some of the materials demonstrate exceptional wear resistance, up to 27 times that of brass and 7 times that of steel, making them ideal for high-performance applications.
Additionally, some nano-plastics possess flame-retardant and self-extinguishing properties due to their low oxygen permeability. They also offer excellent processability, particularly with the successful development of injection-grade nano-ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene, which solves a long-standing challenge in the processing of ultra-high molecular polyethylene globally.
Nanoplastics hold great potential for use in various high-performance applications, such as advanced piping systems, automotive and mechanical components, electronic and electrical parts, and packaging materials for beer cans, meat, and cheese products. With their superior performance and versatility, these materials are set to revolutionize multiple industries in the near future.
